First three points you called are wanted by the mangaka. For example, he wants you to hate Shinji. He despises the anime fanbase in general and evangelion is to make puns to said fans and their tropes. Main characters are overly exagerrated with intent. The fights lose their taste after like 4, i agree, but it might be to underline the growing depression and meaninglessness in the characters. All of the characters development is on their inside (as they act inside of robots, too). So i'd strongly disagree with second point. The subtelty is everywhere, but one needs to dig a bit for it. Oh, Shinji and Asuka do evolve, but only in a small gesture, (him chocking her and Asuka caressing his cheek) almost at the end of the series. They imply a character evolution, but don't get too much into it. Hm, in general i kinda like evangelion, but it hits harder when you are like 15-18 years old, i think. What i really like about it nowadays is the lore & the connections to real world events/esoteric images/esoteric priciples/jungian archetypes.
