Most sterling is junk unfit for anything but refining but the good quality rare stuff absolutely should be preserved and enjoyed.

Probably around VF so not worth getting graded. I detest slabbed coins but can see the value of getting great rarities or uncirculated examples graded, there is no real added value for most coins though.

Nice sterling btw, I agree that your items look better polished but it always depends on the piece. 20th century weighted stuff or "plain" items are often better polished but highly detailed/repousse older items look better with patina showing its age and providing depth and contrast. This c. 1750 ladle arrived a bit too polished for my liking but several years of atmospheric exposure should help.

The "a" date letter stamp does appear to correspond with those used in 1776, and the piece looks perfectly appropriate for it's age.

>fine antiques

LOL. I get what you're saying but no weighted mass produced 20th century piece of sterling qualifies as a fine antique. They were already dented up anyway.

Picrel, a Georgian toddy ladle with a 1747 shilling set in base and whalebone baleen handle I recovered while hunting scrap is a pretty nice antique. Big difference my fren, obviously the good stuff gets saved.

Damn, wish I started earlier. What is the best antique sterling item you've ever gotten cheap or at scrap price?

In my eBay scrapping I came across a pretty amazing antique listed ignorantly and had the $44 total paid in seconds. It arrived today and I'm very pleased.

It's a 13" sterling silver repousse toddy ladle with a legit 1747 George II shilling set in the bottom, and a badass detachable twisted handle made of baleen whalebone. Ya don't see that stuff much nowadays. From my understanding, fresh coins were generally used so it's probably from around 1750. The ladle bowl only weighs 34 grams but obviously this ain't for melting! Happy to add it to the collection, if it weren't polished that shilling alone would be worth $100+. Gonna have to get me some based hot toddies going now.
