I ran up about $35k worth of CC debt in my younger and dumber days and never paid it off. After 4 years the statute of limitations ran out so I couldn't be sued over it. I get a collection letter from a junk debt buyer once in a blue moon, but there's nothing they can actually legally do about it at this point (it's been nearly 15 years). I did get sued for one small portion of the debt, so I settled and paid about 30% of the full amount owed, rather than show up in court. I wouldn't exactly recommend it though. Fucked my credit for 7 years.
