I think that could be a plan. The risk would be after holding for 6-12months that the stocks would be down. Then what would the kid think, "Gee thanks dad, fuck the stock market I'll never trust it again?"
Maybe you can teach him about volatility, expected return and time horizons. Stocks return the most, but they swing a lot, so after 6 months you don't really know what will happen and you could lose money. But statistically it's the winning play. Then ask him if he wants to gamble or not.
