Most likely because the mint isn't being honest about the base metals that are in it. Why don't you get it scanned instead of taking it at word of mouth.

Correct. Sovereigns are 22K gold (91.6% gold) with the rest being a base metal like copper or silver. For some reason the Royal Mint thought that rose gold was a good choice, yet many feel it looks too much like copper. It needs a white metal as well to bring it into the yellow spectrum again.
