Here are some of my options trading principles:
* Pick a target price
* Decide when you think it'll get there (timeframe)
* Double your timeframe, look at the chain near that date, and pick a strike halfway between the current price and your target
* Realize it's a completely retarded trade if there's no open interest or volume
* Never gamble more than 1% of your portfolio. So if you spend 1% on the play, you can ride or die. If you spend 3%, dip the second the option loses 33% of its value. No exceptions (there's always another trade, unless you wipe yourself out like a retard).

LEAPS are a whole different ballgame. There you just calculate the leverage you want relative to the stock's volatility, compare that to some option deltas and prices, bing bang boom, check in once a month and you're done.
