I made a comparison of SSO (2x S&P) vs S&P, pic related. Bars are SSO, orange line is the S&P. SSO survived 2008, underperformed for some years on the recovery, then things turned more consistently bullish and SSO blew S&P out of the water.

Keep in mind this assumes 100% allocation at the start and no cost averaging. If you cost average a 2x position every time market has a meaningful dip (let's say -10% or more), you further pull ahead of the benchmark on the bull runs.

3x performs worse than 2x in this long hold scenario.
