What is the actual condition of the US economy? From personal experience, the evidence seems to contradict itself. I saved up enough from wages/crypto/land to resign from my job earlier this year, and I am still being harassed by my old employer to come back. They seem desperate.

I worked in 'law and policy,' basically reading and analyzing proposed legislation for various corporate clients. It was incredibly boring, which is one of the reasons I quit. Lots of people could do this kind of work, at least in theory. AI systems could probably parse out a lot of it, if monitored and reviewed. And yet, my old employer still seems assblasted at me for leaving. Recruiters still try to contact me almost every day.

And yet, other sectors like tech/finance seem to be shedding jobs at the moment, the banking system in general seems touchy, and many people claim to have trouble finding decent-paying work.

What's the reality of the situation? Are we seeing a bifurcation in which a shrinking pool of employees is being hired for the majority of professional jobs, with everyone else locked out of the market? What would cause a trend like this?
