Originally Wyrd in old english. Meaning 'the power over destiny' referring to the three sisters, the fates, who were oracles.
In myth, the fates were known as Morai and knew the destinies of each person despite humanities free will. The Morai also means 'alloters' and in this role they would hand out 'alloted portions' or 'shares' to each person.
Some believers held them to be daughters of Themis, the goddess of justice and divine order. And that without them the cycles of souls would be in chaos.
The belief was that they decided how each person would receive their 'portion' or 'lot' whether this was food, land, wealth, even glory or death. And to take someone’s share or portion, you would be taking their rightful lot as given by fate.
The word essentially means fate. Which is a predetermined course of events.
