I retired at 36 from a hectic, stressful career. There is a psychological hurdle to retiring that must be overcome. I used to be someone important. I was a necessary cog in a series of gears, and once I retired I was nobody. If you can withstand that though, YOU GET TO SPEND EVERY DAY DOING WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT. I couldn't even imagine having a full time job again.

Some people say "Oh I don't know what I would do if I retired, I would be so bored." In other words

I read books, play video games, exercise everyday, and build shit on my rural property. I still have a social life, hang with my wagie friends a couple times a week. I have long term goals like learning to speak Spanish and sailing around the world. Retirement is hands down the best thing I ever bought, it isn't even close. Sometimes I think "Man that's a nice car, sure would like to drive that. Is it worth getting a job? Fuck no. Not in a million years."

I understand why it might seem like I do this for approval or envy. The reality is though, that I grew up poor as shit, with more affluent friends, and they constantly paid for me whenever we went places. Now that I can afford it, I like to pay that forward. Also, picking up tabs is something I can stop at any time. My investments take a shit, that's all out the window. It's a lot harder to get rid of a mortgage or car payment. Even if you pay cash, you are forgoing investment returns of significant magnitude.
