That thread made my stomach turn. The Basel III banking accords' recategorization of gold as a tier-1 asset is a pretty strong signal that shiny rocks as monetary instruments are far from obsolete, right?

And what PM-enriched celestial bodies or Space detritus do they think is floating around within reach of humanity? If nickel, iron, and olivine were precious then maybe, but I've never heard of viably rich gold, silver, or PGM meteorites being found. If the most gold-enriched meteorites are 10ppm that is only 10 grams per ton, not remotely enough to justify the gargantuan expense of retooling an industry to mine asteroids in fucking space. PGMs are nonmonetary and irrelevant and Silver is not siderophilic like PGMs and gold so is unlikely to be found in any quantity.
