You could try selling puts on UVXY or selling calls on SVXY.
If what you were thinking of was a profitable thing, then people would be doing it. But it's not, and many investors will just buy VIX as a "hedge" -- they're willing to accept a loss on it because it decreases their beta / the downside risk on their portfolio... It's like buying a handful of tech companies AND SQQQ to protect against a slide in the whole tech sector
