Looking for advice lads/ladettes

I'm willing/able to put aside 1,800 Great British Pounds per annum and place it in PM's. As you can tell, i'm a bong. What would you advise I spend it on? Silver is taxed out the arse so don't feel I'll be able to get as much clink per buck. I'm looking towards gold. But what sort? Are sovereigns the way to go?
