Fake pokemon cards are very easy to distinguish from the real thing if you know what to look for. The texture and feel of the paper is pretty specific, and anything different would stand out. More valuable cards have a very specific holofoil patterning, and the full arts will have a textured surface (pic related). Lastly, the card is made of two sheets pressed together with a "core", in Pokemon this is a black core, in Magic it is blue. You can see the very thin coring if you look at the card edge on (or with a magnifying tool). There is also a light test you can do to see the specific "blotchy" patterning that the core produced through the card.

There are plenty of fake cards circulating now though, and a lot being sold as "proxy" cards, but overall it is easy to avoid, and you'll only really trick moms and kids, and they won't be spending big bucks on cards.

Any cards marked "1st edition", any cards from base set 1 that are shadowless as I illustrated above, and anything charizard. I know less about Yugioh but anything from like 2000 and first edition is valuable as I understand.
