Something that's never brought up anywhere, even on gun forums, is the intended uses and inspiration that gave birth to it.

It wasn't made to have an open bolt, that fire rate, those specific magazines, that barrel, or that layout on accident. For all intents and purpose, it's a lighter, more compact, plastic M45, which saw extensive use as tacticool platform for many, many silly outfits and special forces, including US Navy seals, for some 30 years after it officially ceased production. They even put the chink sling rings that the americans had on theirs on the TEC-9.

To no one's surprised, a low-cost, easy to modify, high capacity, hard to actually render completely inoperable, plastic spec-ops grease gun platform ended up incredibly popular. So naturally they applied a lot of downgrades and fuck yous to every part of it over its life, but since they were built to be riced, this has done very little to curb their popularity. They eventually stopped making the 9mm version in favor over a sort of micro version in .22 long. That feeds from ruger 20 cent magazines that come in up to 50 round capacities from wal-mart shelves, and you don't need to make that thing automatic to make it attractive to gangbangers.

Naturally, since people wanted to buy that version, too, they did the only logical thing. They let quality control get so bad, they were literally less reliable than chinese bootleg 1911s. This was really good for the gangbangers, because they could buy up stock for little cost, pull them all apart, and piece together the good components to get high capacity, small frame pistols before those were really a thing. Intratec stopped making those when they found out they were making money.
