So i read a thread on /biz/ a couple of weeks back, about how someone from the UK was making decent money by importing Japanese shoelaces to his local market...

And there are other instances where i read people made good money, by doing nothing but handling the exchange of goods from a country to his local market. Another brit for example was making a small fortune by importing some sort of chips from Poland and selling them to pubs as snacks.

How do these people get into this network? How do they realise it's that one product that will make it in demand, and how do they even get the neccesary contacts to buy in bulk from a company that's in another country?

It just seems to easy to put into practice. But there must be a "shvick" to this whole thing, isn't there?

Would anyone give me advice on starting an importing business? Maybe a starter guide or forum for people trying to do the same thing? What about real estate? I've heard there's potential to make money in that as well. Specifically property development and leasing places.
