My uncultured and undisciplined inferences about such things indicate that demons, ghosts, aliens, entities, whatever you wanna call them, are much like internet trolls. An enlightened anon in these threads stated they are etheric. They rely on you for sustenance, in a way. Much like a troll on this board will attempt to push your buttons. They can feel you feeling them. That discomfort as you walk by a certain place in your home. That pang of fear you get as you lay in your bed at night.

They like to get a rise out of you. The way I see it, they used to be people. In fact, maybe they were normies. Empty, shells of life during life.
