Thiel is someone who appears to have a much deeper grasp on all of this. If you do some research you can see Thiel has invested in some projects and he has a favorable view of btc. So depending on how often Thiel and Musk talk and how aligned they are these days, he may have been tipped off on a deeper level. As another anon said he may have already run some thought experiments on the subject while working at x.com so he had enough background to quickly understand the concept of btc/crypto.
