Personally, I have fingers in several pies, because I really can't predict the future. I do keep about 4 months' worth of expenses in the bank because I optimistically think I can get another job within that time frame if I lose the current one. Then I have a Roth IRA for purchasing individual stocks, a 401k-like account for index funds (half is in the cash account there), and the home itself are the big stores of 'wealth', such as it is. Also, the house is the only debt I have. It is important to pay all bills on time, but the house is too big a draw.
