There are thousands of calibers out there, but as always it's important to remember the concept of supply and demand. Get whatever ammunition most people will be trying to aquire.

For pistol rounds, there are three main calibers. .40 smith and Wesson, .45 acp, and 9mm luger.

.40 smith and Wesson is not a good caliber to stock up on for anything but personal use. It is being abandoned by most law enforcement agencies and private shooters in favor of 9mm. You can get these bullets (and the guns that fire them) for cheap right now due to police surplus, but not many people will want to buy them.

9mm ammuntion represents the single best investment in terms of pistol calibers. During previous ammo shortages caused by political events, this ammunition has sold for over a dollar a round (compared to the 15 cents or so it can be had for right now). Its VERY common, being the most widely used pistol caliber in the world. In america it is used by most police departments, aswell as the millitary and most private shooters.

.45 acp is a decent investment, expect to pay about 20 cents per round if you purchase this ammo in bulk. Though the round is not as common as 9mm, it has been around for over a hundred years and is still favored by millions of private shooters. Hedge with this, but aquire primarily 9mm.
