Sovereign gold coins are a good start. They're difficult to fake and far less counterfeited than gold bars and far easier to test.

1 oz coins from a country you live in, or near where you live are a good middle ground in liquidity and premium pricing (i.e. gold eagles from US, gold maples from Canada, etc).

Be aware that transactions over $10k are required to be reported to the IRS by coin / bullion dealers in the US.

I've bought from Monument Metals (best prices usually), SD Bullion as well as JM Bullion and APMEX (these two have the highest prices). I'd consider them all trustworthy though.
