What are your thoughts on so called 'overqualification'?

Today I got fired from my new job for being 'overqualified'. I finished a higher technical institute for mechanical engineering and I did a kind of assembly line work there. But since I was jobless for about 6 months (since I left school) I didn't really care. I worked fast & precise, I was there always on time.

Is being overqualified a real thing? Or is it just a stupid excuse for having done a bad job?
What should one do then to get a job/keep it?

I currently live with my parents and will for the next 3-4 years until I graduate. I have no expenses besides $50 a month for gas. I have a job that pays $10/hour and I usually take home about $270-$300 a week.

Since I have no expenses I want to turn that money into big money, but I have no idea how. I want to have a nest egg for when I graduate, and it's best to start now. I could just save it all but that's boring.

How will I go about this? Investing? I have no idea how to do any of this shit. Do you guys have any .jpgs or wiki guides I can read? Any tips or warnings before I start?
