I think all it really takes is getting a mate, and then from their making a group of friends comes pretty naturally (the phrase their friends become yours and yours theres).

Personally I hate the idea of going to trendy social events with the purpose of meeting people - it seems so artifical and virtually NOONE will stay friends because theres nothing keeping those bonds together. just my two cents at least.
