the nikkei had a major structural weakness, as only a quarter of the float (shares) ever traded on the open market. the rest were held by large conglomerates like mitsubishi. because of this, and the bullish sentiment of investors, the average P/E was over 100 when the bubble popped. this was not so different than the nasdaq crash in 2000. so the lesson being, if we get to average P/E of 100, it's probably wise to trim.
