The problem with that approach is they have to continue to delve ever deeper into their own narcissistic victim mentality to improve their situation (be that through getting more gibs because you're so poor and black and helpless, or increasing political power and power over speech because other people's opinions are simply unfounded and hateful).
It's advantageous to these people to put themselves in a worse position than they started in. They see not the light and glory of becoming a capable, rational adult human. They see only the gains gotten from being the oppressed, as society has fanned the fires of victimhood.
