They do.
That said, if you just have 300 dollars each month or whatever and want to feel like an actual investor then just buy whatever is down that year/week/month. Actual good companies or good ETFs. QQQ dropped 5%, buy it. BRK is down 7% YTD? Thats an easy buy. AAPL had a shit quarter? Into the portfolio it goes.
Sit down every 1st of the month and watch what (good) people here recommend.
In 20 years you will have a small six figure fortune just with that advice. I guarantee it.

Maybe think about covered calls, if you have like 10k or so.
