It's really hard to get most clients to contract but I have to say the most solid advice is to do contracted work from square one.

Write a contract yourself, make your own terms (seriously FUCK anyone else, do NOT let a client write YOU a contract) -

If they don't want to sign it, immediately move on. Immediately.

If they agree, you take it to the bank and have it notarized which takes 1 minute, you then mail it to them and have them do the same.

If someone isn't willing to go to the bank and sign a piece of paper for a project that is worth at least $200 they are the exact kind of pieces of shit this thread is about.

I admit to not following my own advice though. That's why I still come across flakes.
