I'm north of the 49th parallel, but we have some caves that have a 400 foot drop straight down. It's a technical climb to explore them. Old mines have a bunch of other risks, aside from normal cave risks, including methane. Alberta has lots of natural gas which often infiltrates into mines. (firedamp)

I still love old coal mines and will have one of my own someday.
