I have children as old as you and I went back to school at the age of 27. I spent 6 years in the Navy then worked for a few years. Got laid off and said fuck it and went back to community college for two years...worked dishwashing and labor jobs while I went to school, got accepted to pharmacy school and became a pharmacist.
My advice? Go back to school at the cheapest place that can transfer credits to a state school, take one core course for one semester (English 101, Math 101, etc)...if you think you can handle it, go for it; if not you didn't waste much money or time.
Despite how much people bitch these days, an education will, over time, add up to a better income and more job prospects.
