I think the only good answer to this question is practical, human-level, answer:

Meaning is something that emerges in your relationship with yourself, others, and the world. Life doesn't *have* to have meaning, but it can. Life becomes meaningful when you accept the responsibility that what you do and what you don't do *matters*. They really matter.

To live a meaningless life, all you have to do is act as how you live your life doesn't matter.... and the consequence of that is that you *bear no responsibility* for the state of the world, society, your family, or your present circumstances. Many people live meaningless lives because their belief structures have collapsed, or perhaps they've allowed them to collapse because bearing responsibility is *hard* and it makes them accountable.

Living a meaningful life is hard because it means that if you lie, or betray a friend, or hurt someone, or fail to meet a promise, you bend the world just a *little* more toward evil. Living a meaningful life means recognizing that your actions affect, not just yourself, but the entire society.
