you use the word consuming in a context which seems to imply a fat person eating far too much pie. buying a house is consuming a product which was produced, as is tooling it up. assets are "consumed" into the individuals private economy. some are "used up" (actually consumed), but many add value to an individuals/familys economy (and thus societys) such as tools, or computers, or extended education or the means to teach onself or ones children a new skill (such as buying your child a musical instrument -- sure the instrument is "consoomed", but the child may become the next Roger Watters, adding tremendous cultural and/or monetary value to the wider society)
