The only part you don't understand is motives and reasons. In real life there are several truths and realities so horrifying to contemplate that people will CHOOSE to have their memories wiped so they no longer know them. And will choose to either die or cease reproducing to prevent the knowledge from spreading. This actively selects for dumber people. Anyone smart enough to see what's going on wants to die.

these are not horrifying truths like aliens or spirits controlling or enslaving us. Those ideas aren't even particularly awful to highly intelligent humans. The idea that's so horrifying it kills smart people is that nothing like that is happening. There is no purpose, and nobody is in control, whether it's aliens or AI or gods or angels or devils or bankers or world leaders.
The real truth is nobody is trying to help us or harm us, we're on our own with no real goals or purpose. And that's fucking terrifying.
