It gets expensive if you want to use the drive redundancy method. It's basically just keeping 2 copies of everything on 2 drives. Just look up all the different types of RAID setups. Just be sure to not pick the one where if one drive out of all of them breaks you are fucked.

Use encryption silly. Unfortunately I can't encrypt my physical apartment so when I do die someone will look through all my shit.

Fairly solvable problem as long as the hardware doesn't lock you out from accessing certain types of files to prevent piracy/cheese/terrorism/whatever. Best to keep an old computer just in case.
