I grew up in Michigan. Moved to California in 2011 when I graduated college to make money. Was stupidly lucky and bought a cheap condo for 175k in 2012. Got permanent work from home in 2021, sold the condo for 475k, and moved back to Michigan.

Biggest issue I have with the Midwest is that the people still living here are the ones who were too stupid to leave. There's absolutely a brain drain here and the people who get the opportunity to head to Chicago/NYC/SF go, because Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis don't have those opportunities. With this comes a population that is significantly older than other parts of the country. Gen X is the only demographic left here and the ones that remain are the dumbasses. Michigan has the 2nd highest percentage of native-born residents in the country because it's not a destination for workers.

However, the Midwest has several things going for it. Michigan has beaches on par with California and Florida, forests full of ORV/snowmobile trails, gorgeous inland lakes, and very pleasant weather from May-October. And you don't need a bunch of money to afford a home here. There's no part of this state that isn't a 2 hours drive to a beautiful beach. Out west, it was impossible to get acreage, and that was in places like Phoenix and Vegas where the land was completely worthless. But if you want a rural life where you're away from the highway noise, the neighbors dog barking, or their annoying ass wind chimes, you can make that happen here.

Because you still have a relatively homogenous population in many parts, people are OK with funding public services, whereas the white communities out west were against all public services because that money was heading to Mexicans. It's nice having things like the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota or UM Hospital in Michigan where the doctors performing operations aren't complete morons. The college towns here offer a very high quality of life if you can put up with the liberalism.
