I've been living in Japan since 2012 (was born in the US), and the sex work culture in this country has really opened up my eyes to how much sex work can impact the broader culture.
For instance, it's a common tradition in the first year of university to go together with your friends (usually members of a club you join) to a brothel, usually a pinsaro (blowjob bar). Most places usually have special student discounts in April (the start of the school year in Japan). Basically, what this means is that the only real virgins in Japan are virgins by choice (of which there are a lot, no doubt, usually the "3D are pigs" type). And more anecdotally, it also takes away the desperation to get laid that defines a lot of male-female relationships in the west. If you're that desperate to get laid, just go to a pinsaro, soapland or whatever and you'll be able to think more clearly about your relationships afterwards.
A few more interesting things about the sex work culture here: unlike in a lot of western countries, there aren't really "red light" districts in Japan. You can find brothels pretty much everywhere, for example there's a blowjob bar near where I live that's in the same building as a Denny's.
Condoms aren't required anywhere, because the STD rate in Japan is much lower than it is in the west. Most Japanese seem to assume that the STD rate is basically zero in Japan, although I do believe there are a few cases.
And somewhat tying into the last point, the reason reporting on Japanese sex culture in the west seems to be so poor (you'll see a lot of English language reporting that states Kabukicho is Japan/Tokyo's "main" red light district, which isn't even kind of true) is that 99% of brothels in this country are Japanese only. The few that do allow foreigners seem to all be in Kabukicho, which is probably why foreigners are so fixated on that district. In my opinion, it really is one of Japan's best kept "secrets", if you want to call it that.
