I buy when I think I know something the market doesn't that positively impacts the bussiness, I assume the market has all the other information and it's pricing it perfectly on a risk-adjusted basis.
I sell when I think the market has priced the information advantage I had and there is a better use of my money elsewhere.
It also works the other way around.

That's the idea but more likely than not I have been taking a high risk and just happened to be lucky so far.
