Better have your backup fund ready. The fact that Buffet shits on gold for never earning money but owns thousands of ounces of silver is concerning as well. I don't think he's betting on a 4x or even 10x price spike due to some new industrial use case. The guy moves billions in his trades, a couple million in gains wouldn't be worth the labor cost to have guys haul that metal around.

A homegrown plastics industry would absolutely fuck the Chinese over though. If you have to ship the polymer over there, have them make a widget then ship it back, it ceases to be as profitable compared to moving through the gulf into Mexico. If we're going to use Latin America as our low-skill workshop going forward, being able to sell them the materials would be huge. It engenders an even greater dependence on the US and its industrial output (and its consumer appetite), while blocking out developing rivals with the competency to handle synthetic chemistry.

I'd be careful with platinum though. I have an ounce of it but really treat it like pure speculation. Plat is definitely rarer than gold, but it doesn't have a history of being used for money (even if it has all the traits that make for good money). Right now, the spot is entirely driven by industrial (catalytic/refractory/conductors) uses, and less than 10% of the Pt mined goes into bullion. I could be wrong, and we may see it climb above gold in value one day, but I treat it like a side bet.

Anon, you don't need to be the big dick fiat daddy in a world where no nation on earth can compete with your agricultural output + your youthful demography. China's 1 child policy means that they are heading towards a dearth of young people (with too many men to boot). Russia aborted almost 90% of their kids in the 90s, so they're actually running out of military aged men right now. Besides, we already have the worlds biggest navy, the worlds 1st and 2nd largest air forces, and more experience in logistics than the rest of the world combined. At current build out rates, China should catch up to the US by the mid 2200s.

You don't need to be the world police when everyone else is scrambling for bread crumbs in the era of less. We're going to manifest our destiny all over them
