When I was a true stacker, I liked the 10 ozt bars. After I got a bunch I realized the designs are mostly really boring. I had also accumulated a fair bit. So then I started getting samples of other sizes for the for the novelty, - 1 kg, 100 ozt, 100 g, tiny ones...

Now I buy by design. If it's pretty, I get it. These are mostly 1 or 2 ozt. For stacking, I now do concentrated metals - gold and the '-um's.

>is there anything wrong with just buying whatever is popular?
No. In fact, it's a school of thought to keep to the low-premium, well-recognized pieces.
>a lot of anons show pretty small stacks.
For my part, my 'stack' is scattered and fairly large and eclectic. I do show large portions at times if it's pertinent to the discussion.
>i want to get into buying silver but im still anxious doing something wrong with a ~$26 purchase.
If $26 is a big deal, consider that the world works on fiat, and if you can spare only a tiny amount like that, you are ill-prepared for emergencies.
>also, how important are the motifs to you people?
To me, very important. It's one reason my collection is so varied.
>when buying online, you obviously have to pay shipping.
I never buy less than minimum to get free shipping. Some vendors have slightly higher premiums that cover that cost for them. Some (like GainesvilleCoin) have notably lower prices but charge for shipping.

>I want to purchase a few silver bars, but how do I know which is the right one?
>>some bars are different prices, even if they share the same oz
What do you mean by "right"? That aside, it should be a fine silver (99.9% or finer) bar. After that, it's a matter of provenance and taste. There are some brands that cost more because of reputation, (Englehard, JMatthey) or some highly polished bars (Germania). Kids here really like Asahi (for no particular reason I can discern). I prefer coin bars (those gov't-issued with a face value stamped), especially if they have a nice design (such as the St. Helena ship bars).

>>stamps add or subtract value?
If it's a coin and has that stamp, that adds a level of authenticity and might carry an extra premium (price above spot value).

>>other variables
Generally speaking, the larger the bar the less (percent) you'll pay in premium.

>I wish I could just walk into a silver store, purchase a plain bar of silver, and then leave.
You should be able to. Try a coin shop. Many jewelers do too, but my experience they're always marked up much more.

>6 anti-silver shills
Excuse, me? Watch your presumptuous mouth. I give what I honestly think is good advice. I'm not a cult member. This in /pmg/ - precious metals general, not Wall Street Silver.

I have no minimum goals. As new and interesting pieces come out, I buy them. After years of doing this I find I have far too much generic, therefore have mixed feelings about spot price - want it low so I can buy, want it high so I can offload some crap. I'm also now looking more to gold with the sense that I can realistically afford it in trade with the silver.

You're welcome - glad it was useful.

>stackers should have all the common weights.
I agree. I'm a huge fan of variety.
P.S. - what's DCA?
