Stock is going down, and is expected to continue to go down. Some investors make contracts to buy stock at a future date at a set price, expecting the stock to be lower than this, and so they don't need to fulfill their order, just taking money. This is the short.
However, too many people do that. The stock is overshorted. There's too much expectation that the stock will go too low. This creates an opportunity for other investors to buy and hold the stock, raising its value. The shorts are now forced to buy at a higher price, which is sustained by the longs. As they buy, this raises the price, triggers other shorts obligations to buy, raises the price, triggers other shorts obligation to buy, etc. This is the squeeze.

You squeeze the shorts of their money, and then sell at a big profit. This makes the stock go sky high for no reason, and then drop back to its normal levels.
