They can't exit the trade. Shorting grows their position and retail buy % is so high for GME because the listed value is far below what retail believes is a fair price. So everyone in retail is buying right now and the lower the price the more skewed the interest is towards buying rather than selling, which lowers the liquidity needed for short-sellers to exit their trade; short-sellers who do cover only do so by buying up the supply from another short-seller, which to us doesn't make any difference because the total position size hasn't changed. Any actual closing of positions would need to compete with retail buy orders to achieve this. This isn't a problem for them if they can kill the company, but nothing in the company is under their control. They have no board member plants, and the company has enough cash to survive 10-14 quarters at current pace, which is more than enough to turn profitable. Profitability is more likely sometime this year if we keep getting results like last quarter, which makes actual dividends more likely as time goes by. The biggest question now becomes: why do they need the price down NOW. Tesla is getting hammered too, with most of their yearly losses in the last month, and Tesla has always been one of their primary collateral stocks so maybe it's that.

The hedgies need a vent for all this pressure building up. Turning the company profitable is the same as having led them into a closed room and slamming the doors shut on them. There'd be no liquidity to exit with and no dilution to save them either.
