There isn't even anything that happened news wise for them to spin it around, they're just trying to stir up fear to coincide with the drop. One of the most illuminating questions out there is why did Volkswagen drop so much right before the squeeze? There was no catalyst for their drop, it was just pure shorting, none of which was actually counted as shorting because of the way they were doing it. There weren't really any hedgefund names associated with the VW squeeze blowing up, other than a single German family fund, and the biggest secret out there is that brokers are way bigger directional shorters than hedgefunds ever could hope to be.
