This about it logically. No market maker wants to take retail money to buy a dying company. They see the utility in shorting the stock so they can just pocket the money. And, it is comically OBVIOUS that shortselling allows you to balloon up MASSIVE portfolios. These portfolios are highly leveraged in that you may be forced to cover. But it is so profitable that it is worth the risk. Short selling also has the OBVIOUS strategy that you ideally want to short sell a company to zero, so dead and dying companies are prime targets. However, given the nature of limited shares, far too many institutions attempt to crowd the trades, and they literally cannot find the actual shares in quantities large enough to meet the volume. This is like a feeding frenzy where they all want to be first to the carcass to grab the largest chunk of meat. And in this frenzy, mistakes are made.
Naked short selling sits at the confluence of many different interests coming from all sides. However, naked shorting is ILLEGAL for a reason as it is effectively stealing and securities fraud but is ALSO creates a massive liquidity issue in cases such as these. How do you fix the problem of counterfeiting the OWNERSHIP of a company? On what grounds do market makers pretend to be on in order to do this without going to jail IMMEDIATELY?
