I've been through this same line of thought, and I'll share my conclusions.
The working man is by definition always a sucker because he earns less value than he produces, but this is not always a bad thing. For many wagies, it is, because they're forced into debt-slavery and must do menial labor for pennies. But for the skilled and educated, it provides a worthwhile risk-adjusted return on your effort while also letting you build a basis for starting your venture.
My own answer to this is working a cushy, high-paying corporate job and developing the skills I need to start my own business while I'm there. I suggest you do the same. I would caution against freelancing without first working in the industry first.
