They were integrating with Russia to try to prevent conflict. Germans knew the US has been trying to get rid of Putin for decades. They want those juicy commodities nice and cheap and priced in dollars, and a US controlled puppet regime putting missiles and troops on China's western borders. That's been the "big plan" literally since the 90s. In retrospect, it was a dumb plan, but that's what it was.

Anyway, bigger question is why on earth did they go along with sanctioning Russia. They really really really should have called out the bullshit and told Zelensky, "tough luck m8,
you should make a deal with putler, cuz we're gonna keep buying the gas".
