Took me seven months to get an unpaid internship as an "audition" to get hired to open position. They kept recruiting while I interned and gave the position to some chick with a law degree (not even a J.D.-preferred position), which I guess beat my one degree. Luckily I made myself valuable to my supervisor and he agitated for room in the budget to hire me. First day of salaried work ~10 months after graduation. Supported myself with night and weekend gigs in the meantime.

The pain of someone walking in 15 minutes in and having to start back over is totally eclipsed by the joy of completing in a public place, especially in the bathrooms on the 2nd or 3rd floor with windows that overlook the sidewalks late at night . . .
