For something as in demand as computer science you can certainly choose not to go to college and learn things yourself and just get to that same level. If you have a portfolio of good stuff people will hire you.

University prestige helps more in some areas than in others. I.e. with areas like politics it matters more than in areas that are more vocational like computer science. In any case (assuming you're from the UK) if you have a 2.1 the most important thing for your prospects is how much experience you have through interships/work experience/placements. If you don't get a 2.1 you may as well have just not gone to university at all, though to not get one you really have to be retarded and mismanaging your time spectacularly at the same time.
