I'm not sure. During Bush Jr. I would've sworn republicûcks were laughably incompetent, but now I have few illusions.

The only important thing to government is to keep the two parties in power so nothing ever changes in a way that would destabilize their control over the US.

They are highly competent at getting people to never vote for a third party, and keeping the illusion of choice in place. The goal is less about this election or that one, and more about making people feel like they have a say.

Or the fabulous risk-free reward people would get from sticking that withheld pay into a savings account? Not a moneymarket fund, as those are not even FDIC insured.

I see nothing wrong with the 1-11 month loan you're giving the government by having your taxes withheld. The only problem is if you 100% run out of cash, in which case you'd be fucked anyways if you couldn't pay your taxes.

Vanguard has the advantage of letting you invest in Vanguard Mutual Funds free of charge. As far as I can tell that's literally it. It's tempting for me as VDIGX looks like a well-run fund, but it's not geared for daytraders and most who try to actively trade on it have complaints.
