Suppose for a moment that Tether's books are being cooked and that when audited, is found that it's not actually backed 1:1 to the dollar, and that it's all just a massive ponzi scheme.

What would the implications of this be for the crypto market? How badly would things crash due to this?

There seems to be just over $2 billion in Tether circulating at the moment, which is less than 1% of the total coin market cap, seemingly insignificant. But would a major revelation like it being a ponzi scheme completely destroy the market, Mt. Gox style? Or would it be more minor?

There seems to be a conspiracy theory that Bitfinex pumped the price of Bitcoin artificially in order to become solvent, but I'm not sure if the math actually works out for this, and if confirmed how bad things would end up for us, even those of us who don't own any Tether.
