The Pi Network is a digital currency that is mined on the phone - but not by draining the battery, but merely by checking in once a day and hitting a button: This forms a network, where members vouch for each other, which contributes to securing the network. You can then invite others to do the same, which will further boost your mining rate. In other words: The network depends on the collective contributions of its members. At the moment, the system is at its early stages and, frankly, nobody knows, if the efforts will ever pay off. If anything, I'm guessing, we're talking about early 2020. But who knows: Just in case this eventually does explode, you will be happy to have been there in the early stages.
