Absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. We know coronavirus vaccines have never been successful before. But there's never been this kind of single-minded focus like this in all of human history. It's like the space race, but if every country that could were focusing on it, and failure meant costs of millions of lives over years. It's also not like vaccines are the ONLY way forward. Merck's product would be available prophylactically, and the monoclonal antibodies like Lilly and Regeneron are also promising.
